Can AI Actually Save Money on a Production?

Yes — but only when it is being used in the right place.
AI can save time, reduce repetitive tasks and make certain parts of production more efficient. But it can also create extra work, extra checking and, in some cases, extra risk.
Where AI can actually help
There are plenty of areas where AI can make a difference, particularly with repetitive or time-consuming tasks.
That might include:
research and summarising information
transcription and logging
script breakdowns
scheduling support
admin and document drafting
translation and subtitling support
organising production information
supporting certain post-production workflows
But cheaper does not always mean more efficient
This is where productions need to look at the full picture. A tool might save 3 hours at the beginning of a task, but if someone then spends 5 hours checking, correcting and approving the output, there has not really been a saving. The same applies if AI-generated material creates clearance problems, confidentiality concerns or extra work further down the line. A saving at one stage of production can easily become a cost at another.
Start with the problem, not the tool
Just because a new AI tool exists does not mean it needs to be added to the workflow. If the current process is already quick, reliable and affordable, AI may simply create another layer of work. The better starting point is to ask, what are we actually trying to improve? Then decide whether AI is the right solution.
Saving money should not come at the expense of good practice
Cost is important, but it should not be the only consideration. Productions also need to think about whether the use of AI is fair, transparent and appropriate, particularly where it involves contributors, performers, creative work, personal data or copyrighted material. The strongest use of AI is where it creates efficiencies without lowering standards or removing the right level of human oversight.
AI can absolutely save productions money, but the biggest gains are not necessarily about replacing people. They are more likely to come from helping good teams work faster, reducing repetitive tasks and improving how information moves through a production. Used well, AI can create real efficiencies; used badly, it can simply move the cost somewhere else.
Alté Films helps productions identify where AI can genuinely create efficiencies without introducing unnecessary risk or additional work.
